5 self-sabotaging behaviors to get rid of before the new year

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Are you aware of the ways you sabotage yourself? Do you know how to intervene?

One woman has made it her mission to help you overcome "patterns contributing to the demise of the [your] success."

Meet Sharonda "Nya" Brown. She's a licensed mental health clinician with S. Brown Counseling, inviting metro Detroiters to attend her workshop Get Out of Your Way: 5 Self-Sabotaging Behaviors to Let Go in 2019.

The workshop is set for Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the WCCCD Northwest Campus Larry K. Lewis Auditorium at 8200 Outer Drive West in Detroit.

Brown's created an assessment that will help individuals identify their self-sabotaging behavior, its root cause and how to prevent it from becoming a mental illness.
Workshop participants will learn techniques, mental strategies, and coping skills to help manage every day self-sabotaging behaviors that will be engaged in.
The workshop benefits everyone 13 and up and promotes judgment-free personal growth.

About 30 percent of African American adults with mental illness receive treatment each year compared to the U.S. average of 43 percent, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Why?

  • Distrust and misdiagnosis. Historically, African Americans have been and continue to be negatively affected by prejudice and discrimination in the health care system. Misdiagnoses, inadequate treatment and lack of cultural competence by health professionals cause distrust and prevent many African Americans from seeking or staying in treatment.
  • Socio-economic factors play a part too and can make treatment options less available. In 2017, 11% of African Americans had no form of health insurance.
