7 things to do in your neighborhood this Labor Day weekend

(WXYZ) — With the sun shining and breeze blowing in metro Detroit this weekend, it's the perfect time to hit the town with family and friends.

Here's a list of 7 things to do in your neighborhood:

1. Detroit Jazz Fest

Continuing the tradition of featuring artists and performances that reflect the talent and roots of Detroit’s rich jazz heritage, the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation today announced a roster of homecoming performances and hometown artists that will hit the stages of the Festival. The largest free world-class jazz festival runs through Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30 – Sept. 2, in downtown Detroit.

Cost: Free.

2. Soaring Eagle Arts, Beats & Eats

The 22nd Annual Soaring Eagle Arts, Beats & Eats will take place in Downtown Royal Oak. The festival offers more than 200 performances on nine stages, a highly ranked Juried Fine Arts Show, and local restaurants with some of the finest cuisine in Metro-Detroit. Each year these international, regional and local festival attractions make the City of Royal Oak the premier destination for Labor Day weekend.

Event hours include: Friday - Sunday, Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Cost: Festival admission is $3 until 3pm, $5 after 3pm, and $7 after 5pm on Saturday, Sunday & Monday. Soaring Eagle Arts, Beats & Eats is free to enter until 5pm on Friday only. Admission on Friday after 5pm is $7.

3. Michigan State Fair

Family fun at the Michigan State Fair continues Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 2019 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.

The Michigan State Fair is fun for the entire family, featuring family friendly activities, contests, equestrian shows, petting farms, carnival rides, Shrine Circus, pig racing and so much more! Now operated as a private entity, the Michigan State Fair will continue with deep commitment to the ongoing development and support of agriculture, small business and family entertainment, while preserving the legacy and beloved traditions of the original State Fair.

Cost: Basic admission for the fair begins at $8 for adults and $6 for kids.

4. 2019 Michigan Renaissance Fest

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is open weekends and Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Aug. 17 through Sept. 29.

Here are the weekend themes:

  • Aug 17-18: Pirates and Pets
  • Aug 24-25: Highland Fling
  • Aug. 31, Sept. 1-2: Vikings
  • Sept 7-8: Wonders of the World
  • Sept 14-15: Shamrocks and Shenanigans
  • Sept 21-22: Harvest Huzzah
  • Sept 27: Festival Friday
  • Sept 28-29: Sweet Endings

Events include the Game of Thrones feast, a Masquerade Ball, a royal high tea and Ladies Shopping Day.

Cost: General admission tickets are $11 for kids and $17 for adults.

5. Hamtramck Labor Day Festival 2019

Head out to Hamtramck for three days of fun as the city holds its 40th Annual Labor Day Festival on Aug. 31st, Sept. 1st & 2, 2019 from noon to 10 p.m. $5 per car parking will be available in the City lot at Mitchell & Caniff St.

Cost: Free.

6. Romeo Peach Festival

The 88th Annual Peach Festival is Aug. 29 - Sept. 2, 2019 at the Romeo Lion's Field House and Grounds. A free shuttle will be provided between the show and the Peach Festival Pancake Breakfast at the Romeo Lions Club on East Washington Street in Romeo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drivers eat half price.

Cost: Free.

7. 62nd Annual Bridge Walk


The Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 to accommodate the 2019 Annual Bridge Walk.

The walk will start at 7 a.m.

No bus transportation across the bridge will be available this year. Walkers who decide to walk across the entire bridge will need to arrange their own transportation back to the end of the bridge where they started – after the bridge reopens to public traffic at noon.

Cost: Free.
