September is Hunger Action Month. A little girl from Garden City hosted a lemonade stand over the summer to raise money for Forgotten Harvest.
Eight-year-old Mariam Safah is a very compassionate child and has always wanted to do something nice for people in need.
During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan - Mariam decided to set up the lemonade stand, so she can raise money to help fight hunger.
"I thought that would be a faster way to make money for the poor," Mariam said. "We had a couple of people and we made lots of money and they really enjoyed the lemonade."
Rana Safah, Mariam's Mother, said, "We need to try to encourage kids to remember that there are still people that are really less fortunate and if we don't instill that in the beginning of a child, I don't know if it will be too late."
Mariam wrote a letter to Forgotten Harvest, letting them know she wanted to help the hungry by donating the $100 she raised.
She said, "Because I wanted to help the poor for them to have the money and the food that they needed."
Kirk Mayes is the CEO of Forgotten Harvest.
He was incredibly touched by Mariam's gesture.
"Which will actually equate to about $700 worth of food or groceries to metro Detroit," he said. "This is a a shining example of what one person can do even a child."
Forgotten Harvest decided to make Mariam their cover girl for their Fall newsletter.
Mayes explained," A great example of how faith and family can help to inspire our young people to do something for their community."
"It just makes me happy because I'm helping them," Mariam said.
She plans on doing it again next year.
"The simplest gesture can make such a big impact so hopefully they can carry on and Mariam left a nice impression," Rana added.
