8-year-old girl shot at Detroit gas station over man not getting cigarettes

Detroit police say a suspect has been found and in custody after an 8-year-old girl was shot at a gas station on the city's west side on Friday morning.

According to police, the 21-year-old man was asking customers for cigarettes when he said that if he didn't get them, it was about to go down.

The mother of the 8-year-old, identified as Kaya, was taking her daughter to school when she heard her daughter screaming mommy.

Kaya was shot in the arm, but she is expected to be OK.

8:41 a.m.

The mother of 8-year-old Kaya said her daughter was headed to school when she was shot in the arm.

We're told the man was asking customers for cigarettes when he said that if he didn't get them, it was about to go down.

That's when he opened fire and Kaya was shot.

She was rushed to Children's Hospital but it's not clear what her condition is.

8:30 a.m.

The mother of an 8-year-old girl who was shot at a gas station this morning told 7 Action News her daughter was heading to school when she was shot.

Her mother tells us Kaya was shot in the arm when a guy started shooting outside of the gas station.

It's not clear her condition.

7:40 a.m.

Detroit police are investigating after an 8-year-old girl was shot at a gas station on Detroit's west side.

According to police, it happened at the gas station near Grand River and Wyoming.

Right now, it's not clear the circumstances of the shooting but the girl was rushed to Children's Hospital.
