(WXYZ) — March is National Reading Month. A Shelby Township girl is celebrating by promoting a book that she wrote and published on Amazon.

“I love reading,” said 9-year-old Katie Khaznehkatbi, who is a self-proclaimed book worm.

Just when she started learning to read, she wanted to take another big step and go into writing. Two years ago she entered a contest to write a book.

“There was a teacher at a high school who had a talented student that she wanted someone to write a book for her.”

Lauren Vermeulen was the budding illustrator who chose Katie’s book called “The Unicorn with No Horn.”

Katie’s loves unicorns and proudly says she owns unicorn socks, shoes, two pairs of unicorn pants, three shirts, two unicorn dresses.

“The list can go on and on and on,” she said.

The story is about a unicorn who does not have a horn and the challenges she faces realizing she looks different than everyone else. It touches on the topic of bullying. Lauren liked it because this isn’t the typical unicorn, she is all different colors and is missing the signature horn.

“Trying to make a unique one, that was definitely a challenge,” Lauren said.

With the help of Katie’s mom, Carol Khaznehkatbi, they created this book together. But that wasn’t the end of Katie’s story.

Carol tells us Katie’s mind was set that they were going to have a published book on Amazon. So far, 300 copies have sold. Now, Katie does book signings and readings at schools.

The book is also available at the Shelby Township Library. Katie hopes that readers will walk away with this message: “Being different is okay.”
