Women in Detroit are joining in on the call for action on International Women's Day, with various events planned and some restaurant closures Wednesday.

Organizers and allies, galvanized by the election of Donald Trump and what they consider his policies against women, are looking for ways to be heard, and using International Women's Day as a platform.

"On International Women's Day, March 8th, women and our allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity," organizers of Women's March say on their website.

Their advice for today includes taking some or all of the following actions:

  • Women take the day off from paid and unpaid labor
  • Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
  • Wear red in solidarity with “A Day Without a Woman”

Several women-owned and operated businesses in Detroit such as Sister Pie and Cairo Coffee have closed their doors for the day.
