SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WXYZ) — A prominent community activist was arrested during a protest in Shelby Township Wednesday.

Rev. W.J. Rideout was arrested as protesters gathered to condemn the return of Chief Robert Shelide who was suspended for 30 days after making comments glorifying police brutality.

Demonstrators are calling for the chief's removal. But in June, Shelby Township Trustees voted to keep Shelide in his position.

During Wednesday's protest, Rev. Rideout was arrested on an outstanding warrant, the department said.

According to Rideout's attorney, the reverend was charged earlier with disobeying a lawful order, resulting in police putting out a warrant for his arrest.

Rideout has since been released from police custody. No further information was immediately made available.
