Hope Morphew, who just finished a deployment to the South Pacific for six weeks, came back home and surprised her son Nate at Harvey Elementary school in Sterling Heights.

She has served our country in the Air Force for 24 years.

Last weekend, she reached out to her son’s principal because she wanted to surprise him at school. The principal decided they could do it at the school’s monthly assembly that recognizes students for their achievement, citizenship and effort.

At the end of the assembly, Nate, who’s in 2nd grade, received a citizenship award. He thought his mom would be back home in the next week or so, but he got quite the surprise when she showed up at school and gave him the award.

Hope Morphew told Action News, “I wanted to let him know he’s my life. This moment was for him.”

As soon as Nate saw his mom, he ran into her arms.

Morphew says she’s now retiring from the Air Force and will be able to spend more time with her family.

They plan on celebrating Nate’s birthday on Saturday.
