SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Dr. Charles Mok from Allure Medical is facing federal charges days after the FBI raided his office in Shelby Township.

Mok is charged with Health Care Fraud and Conspiracy to Commit Health Care Fraud, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court on Tuesday.

According to the complaint, feds began investigating alegations of health care fraud related to varicose vein treatments at Allure in April of this year.

They had a cooperating witness, an employee of Allure, who said Allure submitted false and fraudulent claims to Medicare for varicose vein treatments.

The feds allege that claims were false because they were for services that were "unreasonable, unnecessary, or simply did not occur as Allure reported to have occurred.

Allure also began high-dose IV vitamin C infusions to patients at risk of contracting COVID-19 and those who had tested positive. The feds said the witness provided them with internal records showing Allure submitted at least 98 claims to insurance companies, icnluding Medicare, related to infusion therapy services for COVID-19.

"This evidence demonstrates that prior to and continuing during the COVID-19 pandemic, MOK engaged in a scheme to defraud the United States through the submission of false and fraudulent claims to Medicare for payment related to the treatment of varicose veins," the complaint reads.

It adds, "The evidence will further demonstrate that MOK used the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to bill insurers for Vitamin-C infusions fraudulently represented as COVID-19 treatments and preventative measures. In addition to billing for fraudulent medical treatments at ALLURE, MOK failed to observe appropriate protocols at the clinic minimize the spread of the virus."
