Ann Arbor police chief placed on administrative leave

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) — Ann Arbor Police Chief Michael Cox has been placed on administrative leave pending an independent investigation, according to a spokesperson for the city.

The investigation is into an "unspecified issue," the spokesperson told 7 Action News.

No additional information was immediately made available.

Cox was recommended for the position by Ann Arbor's City Administrator Howard Lazarus and began leading the department in July 2019, according to the city's website.

Cox came over to the Ann Arbor Police Department after serving in Boston, Massachusetts as the bureau chief, Bureau of Professional Development superintendent for the Boston Police Academy. He's been in law enforcement since 1989.

Deputy Chief Jason Forsberg has been named acting chief.
