Ann Arbor police investigating extortion involving social dating apps

Ann Arbor police have issued a warning after several cases of extortion involing the use of social dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and more.

According to the police department, hackers have accessed accounts of people using various online dating apps. The suspect contacts victims and claims to have sexually explicit photos of an underage female found on the victims' social media accounts.

The hacker then says they are with the Ann Arbor Police Department and demands payment from either a green dot card or similar financial transaction. The suspect says if they aren't paid they will be prosecuted.

"These solicitations are completely false," police say. They're asking anyone who has been a victim or talks with someone claiming to be fro police to take additional steps to verify its true.
