When Jordan Karam found out Glenn Peters School for students with special needs didn’t have a music program he decided to take matters and his guitar into his own hands.
Jamming with Jordan is the highlight of the week for students at the school and in just the past few months teachers say things have started to change inside the classroom.
“He’s just brought out these feelings that are almost indescribable,” teacher Mary Pelgus said.
When the 23-year-old walks into Glenn Peters there’s no doubt he’s a star.
“I love Jordan,” student Nevaeh said.
Students and teachers love huddling around this one man band.
“All the kids are super into it, they don’t have a music program so I am like a teacher here,” Jordan said. “Everybody knows me by name, we all high five in the hall, it’s really great to be a part of the team.”
Music is a universal language for the special needs students who often get left out of concerts or other events. When Jordan’s around, they’re guaranteed a front row seat.
“It just makes my heart sing because I know it’s making their heart sing,” Pelgus said.
Pelgus says she sees the effects of this music therapy on her students.
“Their reactions, you can’t measure on a standardized test in a school but you can measure a smile,” Pelgus said.
Nevaeh loves joining in on the music, and shaking bells with her classmates.
“It makes me feel good,” she said.
Which is why Jordan comes here to share his passion and empower the students to create new passions of their own.
“I have always loved kids and I like to have a good time with them, if they’re having a good time then I’m having a good time,” he said.
Congratulations Jordan!
