To celebrate the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron will lead a Mass at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament is located at 9844 Woodward Ave., Detroit.

The service will follow a Mass led by Pope Francis at the Basilica of St. Peter at the Vatican at 4 a.m. Eastern on Sept. 4.

Mother Teresa - who is now known as St. Teresa of Calcutta - was well known for her ministry to the sick and dying in some of the poorest areas of the world, and the founding of the Missionaries of Charity religious order to carry on such service. She was born in Albania in what is now a part of Macedonia and began her ministry in 1929. She passed away in 1997.

She was beatified, or declared "Blessed," by Pope John Paul II in 2000. In March 2016, Pope Francis announced that she would be made a saint on the 19th anniversary of her death.
