Aug. 6 primary elections: 7 races to watch in metro Detroit

(WXYZ) — The August primaries are happening on Tuesday, and while there aren't any statewide elections, there are several elections in cities across metro Detroit.

Warren Mayor

Eight people are trying to unseat longtime Mayor Jim Fouts to be the next Warren mayor. The top two candidates with the most votes will face off in the November election.

Warren City Council

Controversy has surrounded the Warren City Council election for months, with the Michigan Supreme Court even getting involved.

Five seats are up for grabs, and four sitting members on the council who tried to run again no longer can do to term limits.

Birmingham Parking structure bond

Voters in Birmingham will vote to approve or deny a plan to demolish the North Old Woodward parking structure and build a new parking structure. It's expected to cost $57 million.

Bloomfield Township special assessment for police/fire departments

Bloomfield Township residents will be asked to vote on a proposed 2.3-mill tax to fund a special assessment district dedicated to funding the township's pension plan -- the township indicates that two-thirds of the people who will benefit from the money are public safety workers, or retired public safety workers.

Highland Park Mayor

Three people are also facing off to be the next Mayor of Highland Park. The two with the most votes will face off in November.

Highland Park marijuana proposal

Highland Park residents will vote on a proposed ordinance on marijuana. If passed, it will allow marijuana locations in Highland Park and require marijuana establishments to obtain a license from the city and state.
