DETROIT (WXYZ) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made a special visit to Detroit.

She toured the Detroit Edison Public Academy, which is a charter school.

She spoke out about the need for more choices for students and parents when it comes to education in Michigan.

Her visit to Detroit was part of her Back To School Tour where she was highlighting her Freedom Scholarships proposal, which would allow parents, no matter their income, to select the school that was the best fit for their child.

Outside of the school, members of 482Forward and the Detroit Federation of Teachers called for DeVos to "lead the charge to fully fund Michigan's public schools."

The organizations point out that there is a $3.7 billion deficit for public schools in Michigan
