Michigan residents beware: scam callers are trying to get your credit card information by claiming to be state employees.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson put out a warning to customers after a number of reported cases.
Callers may be using "caller ID spoofing" to display a number from a Secretary of State office or another state agency. Some of the scammers have reportedly been pretending to be representing a business or government agency and demanding personal or financial information.
If you receive a strange call that appears to be from a Secretary of State office, hang up and call the Department of State Information Center at 888-767-6424.
“Although alarming as this activity is, there are steps Michigan residents can take to protect themselves,” Johnson said in a news release. “Any legitimate agency welcomes the chance to verify whether a contact, either in person or by phone, was appropriate.”
