Legislators are creating new ways to make neighborhoods safer with a new public threat alert system.

It was proposed in House Bill 5442 by State Representative Brandt Iden. The bill was designed to help law enforcement warn residents of nearby threats.

This legislation was proposed after the tragic Kalamazoo shooting took place last February.

“Under no circumstance of this modern age of technology should we not have the capability to rapidly disseminate information as a warning to local residents of violent situations nearby,” said Rep. Iden.

The bill is a proactive measure that will provide real time notifications of ongoing public threats via television, radio and text message, very similar to the Amber Alert system.

HB 5442 is waiting for final approval from the governor.
