DETROIT (WXYZ) — The City of Detroit recently approved a major cannabis business park on Livernois Avenue.

The multi-million dollar project will feature five large-scale cultivation businesses, two processing businesses and a provisioning center.

Construction on the project will begin in May and the first cultivation business is expected to open by this summer.

Green Cure Wellness and Southeast Provisioning will open a Cannabis Training Program that will be housed at the business park.

The program will train Detroiters in the cannabis industry such as master growers, budtenders, processors and business ownership. The training will be free for Detroit residents who were previously convicted of marijuana-related crimes.

Maurice Morton, a former Chief of Special Operations in Detroit who heads the Morton Law Group, said he wants to take his training and employment program to other communities who opt in and allow medical or recreational marijuana.

"As a former prosecutor, many people have been surprised by my investment in the cannabis industry, but I refuse to sit back and watch as other build wealth and African Americans are left out," Morton said in a release. "I want to help build opportunities for other people of color."

A press conference about the program will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Click here to watch live
