A school district in metro Detroit is taking desperate action to get students to school.
Center Line Public Schools told parents they're short on bus drivers and asked parents to drive their children to and from school Tuesday as a way to help out.
The school district said they have eight full-time bus drivers but some are on leave, and it's hard to fill seats when there are no substitute bus drivers.
"I know it's a lot of responsibility driving children, but I just can't wrap it around my head why we can't get anybody to work," said Lisa Cyphers, a parent.
Cyphers said an email was sent out to parents encouraging parents to drive their children to and from school and that buses would still be running but would be up to an hour behind.
"Yesterday, we got when they were going to be an hour to 90 minutes late and that's awful," Cyphers said.
The district said two of their drivers are on medical leave and a third dealing with a family situation. Charles Roddis, chief financial officer for the district, said they've been trying to get substitute drivers. A private company has also been hired to help find people.
"We are doing trainings, so if someone doesn't have their CDL and wants to get it and wants to drive, we're willing to train people," Roddis said.
He said they've never experienced a shortage like this before.
The district wants parents to know this was a one-time request and they expect to get some subs in the door sooner rather than later.
