The Belle Isle Conservancy is working toward major changes on the famed Detroit island.

Beginning this week, the public will have a chance to give input on what they’re hoping to see when a new splash pad is planned, built and opened on Belle Isle.

The first listening session is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Flynn Pavilion. Guests are invited to take part in the session between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Food will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A second listening session is scheduled for July 25 at the Belle Isle Nature Center.

According to the Detroit News, the splash pad isn’t the only change expected for Belle Isle. The old slide that’s been shuttered for the better part of four years is expected to be taken down.

The giant water slide used to be a big draw for the island in the 90s. Kids and adults would fly down the slide and splash into a miniature pool at the bottom, lifeguards were even kept on-duty but the slide has been out of service dating back to 2013.

As for the splash pad plans, a lot of work still needs to be done. Planning stages are only beginning, meaning there isn’t even a strategy for where the splash pad will be situated on the island.
