BERKLEY, Mich. (WXYZ) — The City of Berkley will officially launch its Citizens Police Academy next month, but the class is already full.

The Berkley Public Safety Department says the six-week course is designed to teach residents about the city's police and firefighter operations.

Each week, a professional instructor will focus on topics ranging from fire equipment to staging a mock crime scene.

Citizen Police Academy graduates will gain understanding of what the average person can do to promote public safety in their neck of the woods.

“We’re always looking for ways to connect with the community we serve and we try our best to do that on a daily basis,” Berkley Public Safety Director Matt Koehn said. “The Citizens Police Academy is one more way to be transparent and share the ‘human side’ of our job as it relates to protecting and serving the public.”

To qualify for the academy:

  • Residents must be at least 18 years old
  • Have no criminal record

The course is free, but participants must attend all sessions to earn a certificate of completion.

If interested, contact the department at (248) 658-3380.

The next class will be offered in the summer.
