The clean-up effort in Canada continues after a tornado touched down in LaSalle and Windsor.
The damage is the worst in Windsor on Riberty Road. According to Mayor Drew Dilkens, there are about 15 homes and a number of businesses with serious damage.
“We’ve still got to assess the number of businesses that were impacted and the value and the extent of the damage,” said Dilkens.
Along Riberty Rd. an RV was tossed, trees were uprooted, windows blown out, shingles and siding torn off, fences and other items destroyed.
"My shed is my neighbor's yard,” said Michael Thibert who lives on Riberty.
Thibert said he’s still trying to wrap his head around the mess the severe weather left behind.
“I can’t believe it, it’s stuff you see on the news or in the movies, you never expect anything to happen like this,” said Riberty.
There were no serious injuries due to the severe weather. Only three people were transported to the hospital due to the storm.
“Those injuries are not life threatening, they weren’t critical injuries, people were transported to the hospital, but at the end of the day, this could have been much worse,” said Dilkens.
There is no tornado warning system in place in Windsor and while thankfully there were no serious injuries, the mayor said it wouldn’t have made a difference in this storm.
"There's been a lot of talk on social media and regular media in the last 12 hours quite frankly about the need for a warning system and this is one of those instances where even if we had the warning system, you have to have the data to push the button to send it,” said Dilkens.
He said the weather service in Canada did not have the data about the storm, which means no alert would have gone out.
"The data wasn't provided, it's just proof it wouldn't have worked in this case anyway,” said Dilkens.
This strong of severe weather is not common in Windsor. The Mayor said there was a tornado a couple of years ago, but nothing to this magnitude. Emergency crews told 7 Action News the last time there was a tornado likes was back in the 1970s.
