Cleveland-Cliffs shutting down operations at AK Steel Dearborn plant

(WXYZ) — The AK Steel – Dearborn Works will shut down operations later this year, according to a WARN notice filed with the State of Michigan.

According to the notice, Cleveland-Cliffs, which owns AK Steel, will permanently shut down the hot strip mill, annealing and tempering operations at the plan on Miller Rd.

The notice said that employment separations will begin on July 5 and affect about 343 employees.

Cleveland-Cliffs announced the acquisition of AK Steel on March 13, 2020.

“I am also very pleased to welcome the AK Steel employees and the unions representing the workforce throughout the country to the Cleveland-Cliffs family. From now on, we are a single, united and very strong team," Chairmain, President and CEO Lourenco Goncalves said in a press release at the time.
