(WXYZ) — College campuses are looking a little less crowded these days.

About 250,000 fewer students enrolled this fall compared to last year.

In fact, a new study shows over the last 8 years enrollment has dropped 11 percent.

The biggest reason is the economy. When there are more jobs available, more people will choose to skip or delay college.

Schools are now looking at specific students to fill their classrooms. Many small, private schools are targeting students who would be the first in their families to go to college. Other schools are hoping to recruit adults to finish degrees they may have started years ago.
