A Detroit-based company storing a highly controversial coal-based byproduct is facing an up-hill battle this morning.

You may recall the huge piles of petroleum coke or *petcoke* being stored by the Detroit River.

The storage of the byproduct made headlines after it was feared it could caused major health problems.

This morning, the owner of the site where it's stored wants his permit renewed. The owner of Waterfront Petroleum Terminal Company and its subsidiaries are going before Detroit City Council's Board of Zoning Appeals to appeal a decision made in April requiring the site's owner to build a massive warehouse to store the byproduct.

The owner's attorney says this area has had problems with pollution for years.
