On Monday, Belle Isle will say goodbye to its historic water slide, which has been on the island for more than two decades. People in charge say they have their eyes on building a splash pad.

Officials for Belle Isle say it costs too much to keep the water slide up to date. Instead, they're going to use the money to build a splash pad on the island.

The money used for the waterslide will also be used for the beach, giving it a new patio area, enhanced seating and the splash pad.

This will allow people of all ages to come to Belle Isle and have a good time. The estimated cost is $3.5 million, and officials say it will be done in phases since they are still fundraising.

In October, the Belle Isle Conservancy will hold its annual Polish the Jewel luncheon at the Detroit Yacht Club.

Demolition will begin Monday morning. It's not clear when the splash pad will be ready to go.
