WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) — There were scary moments in Warren last night during a police chase. Now, we are getting a look from police dashcam before it came to a crashing stop.

An officer is recovering after getting treated with nine staples in the head. Dashcam video shows what took place after a man tried to flee police in a stolen van.

“These pursuits are always very difficult," said Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer.

Stop signs and red lights would not slow down the driver behind this stolen van.

The chase started Sunday night around 9:45 p.m. at Nine Mile and Van Dyke. It ended in a crash in the area of 13 Mile and Schoenherr roads, when the van collided with a Jeep.

“Jeopardize not only the officers’ safety and their safety, but innocent victims,” Dwyer said.

About eight police cars chased the stolen van. The officer was cut in the head from broken glass trying to get the suspect out of the van.

In the process, the 27-year-old man was cut in the face. The chase lasted less than 15 minutes.

The van belongs to an adult care organization.

Police say it was in the suspect’s mother’s driveway in Center Line when it was stolen.

Dwyer says his officers followed the proper pursuit protocol.

Luckily, the woman driving the Jeep was not seriously hurt.

“The typical innocent victim who was driving home from work and was caught up in this pursuit,” Dwyer added.

Bond has been set for $250,000. The suspect is facing several charges including assaulting an officer and fleeing police.

The man will be back in court May 9.
