Motown lives on at a week-long camp! High school students from all over Detroit are getting a chance to learn about the performing arts.
It is called "Motown EDU" and it is the third annual summer camp for Detroit high-schoolers.
This week-long event helps students develop their talents.
They're getting help from Rhonda Ross, who has Motown in her blood. She is the daughter of Diana Ross and Berry Gordy.
"Based in and on the tenants that Motown was founded on: hard work, letting your passion come forward and keeping your eye on the prize," she explained.
Students not only learn about singing, choreography and song writing, they learn to brand themselves.
"Business concept, the marketing concept, the pull from the community concept is being passed along to the next generation."
During the camp at Youthville Detroit -- students are broken up in groups and write their own songs.
Sophia Burton wanted to write about police brutality.
She says this camp gives her a chance to express herself.
Burton said, "Bring myself out more and not try to keep myself in."
"Always just so impressed with how they are, how excited they are, how inspired they are," Ross said.
It always helps to get some encouragement from a pro, like Rhonda.
Burton added, "This was my first time meeting her and it was a great experience."
"The next Motown, the next incarnation of Detroit that's where it's going to come from, their imagination and creativity, so I'm thrilled to have my little part of it," Ross said.
After the week of training, the students perform the song they wrote at the end of the camp.
