(WXYZ) — Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter, the man chosen to replace the late L. Brooks Patterson, announced he will run for the executive seat in 2020.

Coulter, a Democrat, made the announcement on Thursday morning.

This comes after Coulter had previously said he would not run for office when he was chosen to replace Patterson.

Coulter said it was not his intent, but after traveling around the county and meeting people, working with the Board of Commissioners, he got excited and decided to run again.

Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner, who is also running for executive as a Democrat, released this statement:

“I’m running for Oakland County Executive with real plans to protect what we love about Oakland County while making our county stronger by building regional transit, embracing diversity, and moving forward on a 9-point equity agenda tackling healthcare, education and the environment. My candidacy offers a proven track record on the job and at the ballot box, and I trust the voters to do the right thing. I respect Dave Coulter, but think he got it right when he endorsed my campaign for Oakland County Executive, and when he said he was too busy doing the job he was given to run for State Representative. I can’t help but wonder if Oakland County wouldn’t be better served by Dave doing the job he was given. We’ve already been through so much.”
