A deadly pet disease is hitting the country and pet owners are at risk.

Leptospirosis also known as “Lepto” comes from wildlife and farm animals who carry it in their urine.

Doctor Julie Hass with the Veterinary Care Specialists says they see it most towards the summer.

It can live in contaminated water and get in a dogs system if they’re exposed.

That includes anyone touching or cleaning up after their pets. In one rare case a woman in New York was reported to hav died after being exposed from a rodent infestation.

"It is a serious disease as well because it infects the infected individual through their liver, their kidney, their nervous system and can be a devastating disease if it's not treated," Hass says. Some symptoms include fever, yellowing and vomiting.

Hass suggest getting the vaccine that will protect pets from the four major strains.

She says it’s best to get it annually.
