The city of Dearborn Heights can rest easy now that a large lizard has been captured.

The lizard was found around 3 p.m. Tuesday near North Brookside and Heather Lane. It was estimated to be around 2-feet long, and was just relaxing out on the front porch of Richard Heatherly's house.

Now the animal is being taken care of at the Michigan humane society.

"It freaked me out," Heatherly said. "I said that’s a first, a lizard at my front door."

Heatherly is a lover of all animals, but reptiles are a bit of a different story.

"I didn’t want to touch it cause I don’t like reptiles," he said.

Imagine his surprise when he found a 2-foot Argentine Black and White Tegu just hanging out on his front porch.

"Went to the front door... I looked, open the door and he was at my front door eating cat food," Heatherly said.

Richard says the lizard quickly darted to his backyard into a dog house.

"When I locked it in the dog house, I figured it was hungry cause it was eating the dog food so I got apples and oranges and put them in the dog house and put a block there and called the humane society," he said.

It’s not the first strange phenomenon that’s happened in recent days. An alligator was also found in Lake Michigan just a few days ago.

"I think it was someone’s pet that probably didn’t have any closure outside and maybe it got out or someone released him," Heatherly said.

He added that he wants the lizard to find a good home, and says he definitely has a crazy story to remember for a lifetime.

"I’ve got video of it so I sent it to all my buddies. They’re all freaking out," he said.
