DETROIT (WXYZ) — We keep hearing Detroit is a foodie’s paradise. More and more restaurants in the Motor City are getting some national attention.

Bon Appetit magazine just released their Hot 10 list of America’s Newest Restaurants. On the list is a bakery in the Core City neighborhood.

Ochre Bakery was ranked fourth. It’s a kind of a hidden gem right off of Grand River Avenue. Sly Harris is a regular at Ochre.

“Great coffee, great food, and even on days that I don’t stay," said Harris said. "I usually get something to go.”

He wasn’t surprised the restaurant that opened only about five months ago, made the list.

“Great decision, based on fact,” he said.

Chef and owner Jess Hicks had no idea magazine writers scoped out the place.

She proudly says Ochre Bakery is all about connections.

“People who grow the food, to the people who prepare the food to the people who buy the food, it’s like a big beautiful cycle,” she explained. “We are cooking from our heart:”

Try their eggs or sandwiches. They have a small area to sit inside and outside. If you can’t enjoy a meal there, you can get takeout and grab some baked goods too.

“Cooking with honesty, cooking with integrity,” Hicks said.

Next month, she will be meeting with the other nine chefs and owners who made the list in New York City at a Bon Appetit event.

“It’s cool to be able to connect with other people in the industry,” Hicks said.

Harris says he’s happy for the small business and doesn’t mind if this best kept secret is out of the bag.

“If the lines get longer, we will just have to wait,” he added.
