The city of Detroit is re-launching its residential street sweeping program after a years-long absence.

Beginning Tuesday, May 11, Detroit Public Works workers will board street sweepers and begin to clean the first neighborhood on their schedule. The cleaning will start following a special media event on the city’s east side.

The street sweeping program was among the highlights from Mayor Duggan’s State of the City Address back in February.

According to the city, they’ll be working to clean 2,000 miles worth of side streets. The streets will get a “clean sweep” three times between May and October annually.

Cleaning debris is expected to be more than a move for beautification purposes. Clean streets lead to less debris and gravel on roads that can lead to skids and collisions at intersections. It also lessens the possibility of debris being thrown by wheels when you drive on side streets.
