DETROIT — A gas station clerk who police said was trying to shoot at a chip thief, but instead hit the wrong person, has been charged in connection with the shooting Tuesday.

Safaa Marzok has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice and five counts of felony firearm.
Surveillance video was released this week that shows the 27-year-old open fire inside the gas station on West Warren Tuesday evening following an argument with the suspected thief. Marzok shot at the front door and struck a 22-year-old man who was holding the door open for the suspected thief.
The victim was shot in the stomach and is in temporary serious condition.
"Certainly I don't think there is anyone who would believe it's OK to engage in this kind of response over someone stealing a bag of chips -- even if he's there every day this week stealing chips," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.
