The Detroit Public Schools district has been in the news lately for some not so good reasons, but today, students at Western International High School are making their own headlines.

They collected nearly six pallets of water for Flint.

The Flint water crisis came as a shock to this group of high school seniors

"You hear about the children who had lead poisoning, losing hair and having health problems ... it just was reminding me of third world countries and something I never thought would happen here," said Julia, a student at Western International High School.

In February, Julia and two of her friends Yajira and Lydia told their principal they wanted to help bring clean water to families in Flint.

With the help of an advisor, they organized a water drive. Case by case, dollar by dollar, they filled nearly six pallets of water and loaded a van.

They will personally deliver it to students at Flint Northwestern High School.

Students say they hope this first trip to Flint is just the beginning.
