A Detroit judge is being called out by Detroit’s top cop. Police Chief James Craig says that the judge has allowed too many violent criminals back on the streets, or simply dismissed their cases.

While the chief insists the criticism isn’t personal, he is adamant 36th District Court Judge William McConico has made poor decisions that incentivize criminal behavior.

“Criminals who shoot at police officers cannot be allowed back on the streets,” Craig said.

In response, the Judge has defended his decisions saying: “That type of rhetoric doesn’t help, and I’ve always been fair.”

Craig has pointed to at least one recent case involving a habitual criminal being set free, only to run from the law. McConico, who has been on the bench for 8 years, maintains he’s still open to dialogue with the chief.
