Detroit police say a standoff with a man on the city's northwest side has ended with the man in custody.

It happened in the area of Abington Ave. and Ray Monnier St., which is near Grand River and Southfield.

Police say the standoff started around 3:30 a.m. when neighbors called about someone firing a gun. In all, more than 30 shots were reported being fired.

The Detroit Police Special Response Team and a mobile command post arrived on scene around 5 a.m.

Police say the suspect is a retired Detroit police officer with 20 years experience. We're told he had been drinking. Police have not reopened the area as they continue to search his home.

Shortly after, police say the standoff ended when the man tried to flee the home. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving charges.

As police searched the home, they found grenades inside, prompting the bomb squad to be called in.
