Detroit Public Schools Community District planning to open 5 new schools

DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit Public Schools Community District held a State of the Schools address to discuss what is up and coming and how it is fixing past issues.

According to Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, enrollment is up 4,800 students over the past three years.

The spike in enrollment means a greater need for teachers, adding to the current shortage.

Vitti says they have been able to add 1,000 positions across the district, reducing the teacher shortage from 275 to 120.

The district also has plans to open five new schools this upcoming fall.

Vitti also addressed drinking water, after water fountains were shut down last August when 57 schools tested positive for lead and copper in the drinking water. He says so far, they have installed 388 water stations across the district – 152 water stations are still needed.
