DETROIT (WXYZ) — City of Detroit residents are now able to register to get a 50 percent discount on parking tickets.

According to the city, the program which passe earlier this year in Detroit City Council will now give residents the chance to cut the fee in half if they pay within five days.

You must live in the city of Detroit and have your vehicle registered to an address in the city to qualify for the 50 percent discount.

The program, introduced by Council President Brenda Jones, and Pro Tem Mary Sheffield, aims to give relief to low-income residents visiting downtown to do business or attend events.

First, you must verify your license plate by clicking here, and then you must register your vehicle with the municipal parking department. To do that, you can do it on the Park Detroit app, online by clicking here, or at the department located at 1600 W. Lafayette.

Normal tickets are $45, and the fee will be cut to $22.50 for residents if paid within five days. Last year, the city said 20 percent of unpaid parking tickets belonged to city residents.
