DETROIT (WXYZ) — The United Irish Societies will kick off its 61st annual Detroit St. Patrick's Parade on March 10.
Festivities will take over Corktown beginning at 1 p.m. near Sixth Street and Michigan Avenue and continue west to 14th Street.
The parade will include marching and pipe & drum bands, color guard units, floats, clowns, novelty groups and the popular Family Fun Zone.
As one of the largest St. Patrick's parades in the country, this year's event is expected to attract 80,000 to 100,000 people.
“For 61 years, the St. Patrick’s Parade has brought together people of all cultures and nationalities in metro Detroit to come together to celebrate Irish culture and make lasting memories,” 2019 Grand Marshals Paul and Agnes Gowdy said in a joint statement. “We look forward to continuing that tradition this year. This parade is a great time to celebrate Corktown, celebrate Detroit and celebrate the positive momentum in the area.”
Benefiting charities include: the Clark Park Coalition, The Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program, The Children's Center, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, UIS Scholarships Endowment Fund, St. Pat's Senior Center and Bridges Beyond Boxing.
