The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is changing with the times.
Today, the DSO announced a new social progress initiative.
What does that mean? Well, think less of music in the group’s venue and more music in the streets, reaching communities across metro Detroit.
The project’s efforts also aim to help the DSO prioritize resources, incorporate fresh thinking into existing programs, and create new programs to serve critical needs of the community.
One of the main goals: expansion of music lessons to Detroit students. The DSO says it will soon bring a free lesson program to students in addition to creating a new youth chorus as part of its Civic Youth Ensemble.
"Research shows us that arts education has an enormous impact on underserved youth,” said Herman Gray, President and CEO of United Way for Southeastern Michigan and a member of the DSO Board of Directors, in a statement. “We also know that music can be a tool that improves the quality of life for so many people."
