DETROIT (WXYZ) — The City of Detroit has extended the deadline for Property Tax Exemption applications through Dec. 20.

Although the city opened additional counters to meet demand, there were long line on Dec. 9. With the high demand, the city decided to extend the deadline.

“We experienced a great response from residents seeking financial assistance on their property taxes. It’s important that we provide Detroiters with resources in a timely and efficient manner,” said Deputy Chief Financial Officer/Assessor Alvin Horhn. “Continuing to accept applications to December 20 will allow people more time to apply for the support they need to stay in their homes.”

Depending on the household income, a homeowner can receive either a 50 percent or 100 percent exemption on their property taxes for each year they are eligible and apply.

Applications are available here by searching "HPTAP." Applications may also be requested by calling 313-224-3035 or by sending an email to a assessorspecialprocessing@detroitmi.gov. Applications can also be submitted to the city in person at the Office of the Assessor, 2 Woodward Ave., Ste. 804.
