(WXYZ) — The City of Detroit is working to plow both major and residential roads after a record snowstorm that started Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning.

The city said people in residential areas will see their roads plowed within 24 hours, once the removal starts. But, the removal doesn't start until the snow stops falling, which may not be until late Tuesday morning.

Detroit Public Works crews will clear about 600 miles of snow build-up on Detroit's main and commercial roads, the most heavily-traveled areas. Then, contractors will take care of another 1,800 miles of residential streets.

"Within 24 hours, our contractors are required to have plowed all the neighborhood streets, and we're hoping people will be able to get in and out by Wednesday. That's the goal," Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said.

For each snow event like this, once half of foot of snow or more is expected, the city spends about half a million dollars in its response. Of course, we're also bracing for yet another snow dump on Thursday, meaning clean-up efforts could stretch into the weekend.
