(WXYZ) — The Detroit Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Center are now certified as sensory inclusive through KultureCity's certification process.

The process trained staff and volunteers on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory-overload situation.

The DZS says that sensory sensitivities or challenges are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and similar conditions. One of the major barriers is sensitivity to over-stimulation and noise.

“With this training and certification, we are now better prepared to assist our guests with sensory sensitivities to ensure the most comfortable and accommodating experience,” said DZS Executive Director and CEO Ron Kagan.

Guests who feel overwhelmed by the environment can get sensory bags that are equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads. There is also a dedicated sensory room for those who might need a quieter environment.
