DETROIT (WXYZ) — Across the city of Detroit, Good Samaritans are stepping up to help the homeless community, seniors and those who are struggling with disabilities.
“The work is underway as soon as the snow begins to fall,” says Breanna Sullivan, a volunteer with “Serve Detroit.”
The organization helps to clean sidewalks and driveways for those who are elderly, or unable to take care of the snow themselves by partnering volunteers with citizens at risk. For several years, the groups of volunteers have coordinated together with the mayor’s office to make the program a reality.
Also making a difference on a big scale is the team at “Empowerment Plan,” founded by Veronika Scott. The Detroiter is devoted to helping the less fortunate by donating winter coats that unfold into sleeping bags. Her initiative also employs people who’ve found themselves without a home.
“We are so proud to make an impact and have coats we can provide to people, to protect them from the cold,” says Scott. As her company has grown, they’ve also expanded to making deliveries in other cities around the country.
