DETROIT (WXYZ) — When Fiat Chrysler got city approval to build a new assembly plant on the east side it included that Detroiters get the first shot at 5,000 new jobs, after UAW transfers.

The new plant is set to open in December 2020. It is still not known how many production jobs will be available, however, Mayor Mike Duggan says the city is working to make sure thousands of residents are qualified.

At this event hundreds took math tests, drug tests, and they will be counseled on placement, training and other needs to be qualified when they apply to FCA for the new jobs.

The mayor says they will pay $36,000 to $60,000 a year for the positions. Several more of these job events will be held in the months ahead. The mayor also says suppliers to FCA have called the city to look into locating near the new plant on Mack Avenue and that would mean more new jobs.
