The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Operations Center is changing the way it handles emergency calls.

Dispatch is now using Next Generation 911, an Internet Protocol-based system.

This is said to allow digital information like voice, photos, videos, text messages, etc. to flow seamlessly from the public, through the 911 network and on to emergency responders.

The transition began at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Additional telephone lines were set up to ensure that non-emergency calls were still forwarded to Dispatch.
