DETROIT (WXYZ) — A dog that found its way onto the icy Detroit River, and then on a small island at Belle Isle state park was rescued Monday by the Michigan Humane Animal Search and Rescue team.

The team was working to rescue the dog from the frozen water when the dog moved to a small island across the ice on Belle Isle. The team, which is the only one in the region qualified and equipped to perform a water rescue, deployed flotation devices, equipment and cold-weather gear to get to the dog.

The dog was rescued and taken for treatment of possible hypothermia at the Michigan Humane Mackey Center for Animal Care in Detroit. It's unclear how long the dog was out on the ice.

Michigan Humane isn't offering access to the dog at this time as needed care is provided at this time, a release states.
