A Bloomfield Hills podiatrist has been sentenced to prison Tuesday after his alleged involvement in a health care scheme, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Authorities say 70-year-old Lawrence Young participated in a "$1 million scheme involving podiatry services that were billed to Medicare but were never rendered."

Young was sentenced to 28 months in prison and ordered to pay $337,907.33 in restitution to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Young pleaded guilty to one count of health care fraud in January 2018.

In his guilty plea, officials say Young also admitted to defrauding Medicare from January 2010 to April 2017. Young allegedly regularly submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare for reimbursement "even though he knew that his patients routinely received nothing more than a non-medicated dressing."
