A Domino's Pizza delivery driver was shot multiple times during delivery early Wednesday morning in Midtown Detroit.

According to police, the 33-year-old man made a delivery in the 600 block of Willis, near 2nd Ave. and one block south of Canfield, when he was shot.

A source close to the case says it appears a man pretending to be a customer called for delivery, and when the driver arrived and got ready to hand over the pizza, the customer aimed a gun at him.

Police say that armed robber demanded cash. The delivery driver said he didn't have any money on him and that's when the robber opened fire, according to the source who added that the driver was able to fight back by grabbing for the gun.

The driver was shot multiple times and was able to take off running when an accomplice showed up, according to police.

The driver was shot in the left side of his forehead and the left side of his neck.

By Wednesday afternoon, the driver had been released from the hospital, but he continues to recover.

Detroit Police say they have been able to make one arrest in the case. They are still searching for the second suspect.

Jenny Fouracre, spokesperson for Domino's, released the following statement:

"We are shocked and saddened to hear of this terrible crime, but we are heartened to learn the driver is recovering. Domino's delivery drivers work hard and their safety is important. The local franchisee followed the safety policy that requires drivers to carry less than $20 in cash with them. Our local franchisee is cooperating fully with the police's investigation and we hope that whoever did this is brought to justice quickly."
